Richardson, Tony
   b. 1928; d. 1991
   Film director
   Like Free Cinema collaborator Karel Reisz, Richardson was an Oxbridge educated member (arguably, instigator) of the British new wave in both theatre (with his 1958 production of John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger) and cinema (with his 1959 adaptation for Woodfall Productions, formed with Osborne in 1958). A formidable, nonconformist character who worked simultaneously in television, film and theatre, Richardson’s numerous film adaptations included A Taste of Honey (1961), Tom Jones (1963), Hamlet (1969), Joseph Andrews (1976) and The Hotel New Hampshire (1984), alongside the epic The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968). Richardson moved to California during the 1970s, directing his final film Blue Sky in 1990.
